Kanopy – Library support material

On demand streaming video service that provides access to a large collection of movies, independent films and documentaries.


Access is via a website browser and mobile device apps. You have 10 play credits per month. You will see a "play credit tracker" at the top right of your library's Kanopy platform to alert you of how many play credits you have remaining for the month.  Your play credits reset on the 1st of the month.

Watching Kanopy on IOS and Android Devices

The Kanopy app is available in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. In order to use the app, you will need a Kanopy account that has an active library membership. If you do not have one, follow the instructions below.

  1. Create a Kanopy account
    When you open the Kanopy app you will see a welcome screen. Swipe through and tap on “Sign Up”. Enter your first and last name, email address, and password, or click on the Facebook or Google social login button to create your account, then Sign Up. You will receive a verification email at the address you used to sign up - click the link in the email to verify your address.
  2. Add your library
    Follow the prompts on the app to choose your public library and add your card information. Once your information has been successfully added, you’ll be able to proceed to watch the films on the app.

Kanopy Kids

Kanopy Kids has a diverse selection of educational and entertaining content that range across Movies, TV Series, Animated Storybooks, Live Action, and Animated favourites. Kanopy Kids is appropriate for children ages 2 and up, with a focus on Kids age 2-8. Parents can also choose to implement parental controls to enable them to stay within the dedicated Kanopy Kids area for age-appropriate content.

Technical details

The Kanopy service responds to the connectivity speed of the end user and delivers high to low resolution streaming based on local connections.

Promotion ideas

Performance rights are included in the subscription, so that films can be streamed to an audience. Hold a film night in your library. Group viewing is permitted if there are no admission costs and no profit is made from the screening.

Students and teachers are welcome to use Kanopy films in the classroom. Instructors can create video playlists for students to watch on their own time or on-campus. Here is the guide to creating playlists/clips.

Promote Kanopy on social media. Below every film is a row of social media buttons on the “Share” tab. Simply log into your chosen social media application on the same browser to share links to specific films.

  1. What are the system requirements for Kanopy Mobile Apps?
    In order to use the Kanopy app, you will need to be running at least Apple iOS 9 or Google Android 4.2
  2. Can the films be downloaded to my device for offline viewing?
    You do need an Internet connection in order to play the films. They cannot be downloaded to your device.
  3. How can I only allow playback on wi-fi?
    Navigate to the app menu and select Settings. Switch the Cellular Data toggle off (the switch will appear orange when on). When this is off, you will not be able to stream on the app unless you are connected to wi-fi.
  4. How can I adjust video quality? 
    Go to the app settings and select Video Quality. Two options will be displayed - Auto and Basic. When Auto is selected, the video will play at the highest quality possible. When Basic is selected, the video quality will play at a lower resolution. More information is available about video quality on Kanopy.
  5. How do I enable closed captions/subtitles?
    While the film is playing, tap on the speech bubble that appears at the top right corner of your screen or the ‘cc’ symbol at the bottom of the screen. Select English (or your preferred language if available), and you will automatically be brought back to the video with closed captions/subtitles playing on your screen.
  6. How can I easily find films that I have not finished?
    In the app menu, select "Continue Watching" (located beneath the Watchlist). This will display films that you have viewed before but have yet to complete.
