National Geographic Virtual Library – Library support material

This Archive collection includes the following parts:

  • National Geographic Magazine Archive, 1888- current
  • National Geographic: People, Animals, and the World (PAW)
  • National Geographic Kids

This collection brings together a complete archive of National Geographic Magazine, every page of every issue; from 1888 – current (one-month embargo)

Along with the Magazine Archive; a cross-searchable collection of National Geographic books, images, maps and videos and National Geographic Traveler magazine from 2010 to the present make up the People Animals and the World (PAW) collection

The final part of this collection is comprised of the National Geographic Kids Magazine, from 2009-present (3-month embargo), along with a selection of National Geographic books, images and multimedia.

National Geographic Kids can be accessed via a separate URL link to the other National Geographic collections which is useful when the public library has dedicated children’s computers

Each library service receives 2 URL links specific to their Council – one to the main site and one for the kids’ site. RLQ and IKCs are considered one library service and have 2 URL links – one to the main site and one for the kids’ site.

National Geographic Virtual Library allows for unlimited simultaneous access including remote access.

IP address authentication has been set up for access to this collection within your library and barcode authentication has been set up for members using it remotely.

National Geographic Kids can be searched through the main NGVL website, or each library may choose to add a separate link.

Technical details

Set up access for your library members. Add your specific URL to your website and/or via your library catalogue. Your library users will see the Gale landing page and need to enter their library barcode to access.

Alternatively, if your library service does not have a specific URL, you can still provide access to NGVL via State Library if your library patrons are also SL members. Your users will see the Gale landing page for State Library and will need to enter their SL library barcode to access.
